2 sim is a phrase the references mobile phones with two sim cards to describe people of mixed heritage, dual nationality or multiple residence. after being called 2 sim in conversation with a stranger while on a walk through freetown (a recording of this moment features on the record) duval began to explore what the 2 sim experience is in contemporary west-africa. 2 sim ep was created from 2 months of field recordings and interviews with family, friends and peers in freetown sierra leone. these site specific recordings are collaged with solo piano recordings and production recorded in sierra leone and the uk. the ep is accompanied by a short film/ music video of the same name which duval shot and directed whilst making the record. 2 sim ep is the second release from carrying colour which follows on from 2017 s sen am -

love makes the world go around. “two”, the second album by the soul session, is full of love. ralph kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer from south germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into soul, jazz, funk and world music. being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover scene, kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with “one”, the first soul session album. “one” was built on a solid backbeat of soul, hip hop and funk, while “two” now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. “quantraversa” featuring the voice of las vegas based neo-soul queen georgia anne muldrow is the mind- blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic statement. quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but that is not the point, says ralph kiefer. “this album is a journey to the inner self. the recording process was like meditation. i often started with a loop, or an idea for a melody. it evolved from there and i simply let it happen. when i involved the lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.” the double vinyl is housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

manana presents a new remix ep bringing together some essential re-works of sound species and ache meyis collaboration recordings. originally recorded in 2016 in santiago de cuba during the lead-up to the manana festival in the city, the original sessions were an inspired fusion of ache meyis deep folkloric afro-cuban styles with sound species subtle electronic touches. the new re-works have attracted some familiar names from clubland: broken beat don ig culture keeps the roots of ogun meyi meyi intact with a bass-heavy, percussive attack brilliant uk drummer and producer tom skinner strips back egrem bata jam on a pulsing new version chicago legend ron trent creates a more melodic dancefloor re-work of alinas calypsos while sound species themselves beef up the original afro-haitian rhythms of the same track for a dubbier treatment.

the next release on our label is coming from berlin based nick beringer and we are very happy to welcome him on board. we have been following his work for quite a while now, so we were more than happy to receive this demo from him. the three tracks that we have chosen are a bit different from his usual productions and are working well in different situations or hours of a set.

50th anniversary edition of the white album in a new stereo mix by giles martin.

utopia cloak arrives on film with six track ep, marina gardens. utilising both electronic & acoustic components, the british producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. the music explores a curious production aesthetic - at once half sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls & glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, utopia cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore - riffing on downtempo & idm with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks & rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure & songcraft. contrast is the key here, though - and utopia cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic per-cussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favour of a lush, rewarding lis-tening experience.

coming next from adult only: the repress of one of the most sought-after 12s from the label back catalogue. ao19: “formula express – main course” was originally released in 2002 and featured guillaume la tortue, jef k and chris carrier.
this is actually some of the last records ever produced by the mysterious guillaume la tortue, one of the pioneer of electronic music in france, who’s quoted by laurent garnier in his infamous “electrochoc” book as one of his main influence back in the days.

the record opens on the “main course”: a classic tech-house number with a beautiful 909 beat and a tasteful use of various samples and fx all through the track. the funky vocals still sound fresh today but the secret here (as often with chris carrier’s related work) is the groove – the kind of groove that reminds you summer days in the park while the strong bass-line announces already the next track.
on the flip, “starter” stands out as the perfect dancefloor killer with an infernal groove and a real fat analog bass-line that will keep you moving whether you want it or not. add just a few crispy tribal percussions on a classic raw 909 beat and you got the simplest and dubbiest song of the record but also the most efficient dancefloorwise.
the last cut, “apple pie”, might be the deepest of them all. spacy melodies and trippy vocals in the background make you first feel like you’re chillin on some extraterrestrial beach far away from earth. it starts as a nice breakbeat building the atmosphere before slowly evolving into a more 4-4esque tech-house with the bass coming in only after a couple of minutes. even if the sound was resolutely analogic, the whole ep is extremely well produced with a special care for details. at many levels this three-track ep is a landmark in the label history.

ltd repress! for their first afro-brazilian compilation the german jazz & milk label teamed up with tahira, one of sao paulo s most active djs andmusiccollectors. levanta poeira (afro-brazilian music & rhythms from 1976 - 2016) highlights a few of his favourite dj pearls and encompasses brazil s various regional musical styles influenced by african and amerindian forms. while most foreign music lovers tend to approach brazilian music by having american music genres such as jazz, soul, funk, disco as a reference, tahira s personal wish was to showcase the rich musical roots and facets of his country by featuring carefully selected artists and bands from the past 4 decades. most of these tracks will be made available on vinyl for the very first time with a highlight certainly being tahira s -a toda menina baiana- remix (vinyl-only) of one of brazil s absolute musical heroes, gilberto gil.

last year japanese public broadcaster nhk aired the animated superhero series “the reflection”. the legendary english musician/producer trevor horn served as music producer for the anime. the story of “the reflection” is set in a world where a mysterious atmospheric phenomenon known as “the reflection” killed many people all around the world while causing the survivors to spontaneously develop superhuman abilities. some people become heroes, others become villains...
while achieving great success as a member of the buggles, yes, and art of noise, trevor horn also worked as producer for many popular musicians, such as paul mccartney, frankie goes to hollywood, tom jones, cher, grace jones, seal, tina turner, lisa stansfield, pet shop boys, simple minds, and mike oldfield.
